You can start saving money when you are at the store by buying a whole chicken. I’ve seen whole fryers for as little as $0.59/lb at the local market. It definitely is a great price!
However, I choose to buy organic chickens for my family which cost a lot more per pound which brings me to my first money saving tip!
1. Buy chicken in bulk and store in freezer
The best price on whole organic chickens that I have found is $2.50/lb at Costco and the deal is made even sweeter when you buy a case of whole chickens. The price comes down to $2/lb!
Buying a case of chickens not only saves money on the price, but also saves me from having to make last minute shopping trips several times a week!
I really don’t like going to the store every couple of days, anyone with me??!
You will be getting 10 chickens with a case, so you will need to have a large freezer (see the freezer I use) or you can split the order with a friend. I freeze all the chickens, thawing and cooking one per week.
Don’t belong to Costco or you don’t want to buy a case of chickens?

2. Cook your chicken overnight
My next money saving tip sounds kind of weird. Cooking a chicken overnight???
Well, if you have the problem of coming home after a long day of work, smelling the amazing chicken in your crock pot, and you tear into the chicken, conveniently forgetting how you planned to use the chicken in several meals… like I do, then this tip is a lifesaver!!
A good crock pot, which you leave on all day when you are gone anyways, will perfectly cook your chicken while you sleep. (See my favorite programmable one here!)
When you wake up, you aren’t tempted to eat half of the yummy chicken and you can shred the meat off the bone, portioning it as you go, for several meals throughout the week!
3. Use shredded chicken to stretch meat costs
In the last tip, I told you to portion out the shredded chicken for use in several recipes and this will help you cut back on meat costs.
My price point is $5/lb of meat, but when I only spend $2/lb on chicken and I can get about 6 cups of meat off of one chicken, it frees up quite a bit of money in my grocery budget for something else.
You can stretch your chicken by including more veggies and other items to your meal, instead of having meat as the star feature!
