I have been sitting on this nomination for the Blogger Recognition award for two months, humbled to receive the nomination and unsure of what I should say.
Debbie, who gave me the nomination, has been such an encouragement to me as I have started my blogging career as well as an inspiration. She has been a great resource for me and her writing is amazing. Thank you Debbie for nominating me for this award and for thinking so highly of me and my writing. I appreciate your confidence in me.
I wanted to thank all of my wonderful readers as well for your interest in my story and for allowing me to be a part of your life. I couldn’t do this blog without you and I share this award with you.
How my blog started
In the first couple of years, after I became debt free, when people started asking me how I was able to become debt free and questions about their own finances, I began to realize that my story isn’t just my own. My story has impacted and influenced others to take charge of their finances. Completely blown away how paying off a credit card, a car, and some student loans would allow me to show hope to other people struggling under the heavy load of debt, I found myself wanting to see them experience the same freedom and peace I have personally experienced. As the passion to help others gain control of their finances grew, so did the desire to start Cook With a Shoe. Through blogging I am able to reach more people and to serve them in the area of personal finance. I started this blog January of 2015 and am quickly approaching the one year mark, with a lot of exciting things in the works to share with you in the near future.Give some advice to new bloggers
If you are at all interested in growing your blog as a business, then start building your email list right away. One way you can start growing your list by guest posting with other bloggers in your niche. Follow their guidelines for pitches and spend a lot of time on your post submission giving your best effort. Stretch yourself. Do you have blogging friends who are accepting guest submissions? Write for them even if they are a smaller blog so you have the experience and can add that post to your writing portfolio. You can still gain traffic, new followers, and new opportunities. Before your guest post goes live, make a simple landing page welcoming the guests from the other blog. You can explain who you are and give them a guided tour of your site by sharing links to popular posts they may like. Include ways to sign up to your newsletter on this landing page. In the bio of your guest post, instead of linking to your general website, link to the custom landing page you created for readers of that blog. Give your guest readers a reason to hop over to your site and offer them a freebie (printable, report, etc… something of value) in exchange for signing up to your email list. Make sure all the links work to your custom landing page and your freebie before the post goes live. Promote your guest post extensively. Nominations I would like to nominate the following bloggers for this award as well. Please stop by and visit them. Thank you again for the nomination Debbie! Thanks for the nom 🙂 These are such great tips, especially about helping other bloggers. I really need to create a landing page – great tip and reminder! This seems to be such a smart way to bring readers in.
Charissa says
You’re welcome Kristin! I finally set up a landing page for one of my guest posts with a freebie offer and saw a huge jump in email subscriptions. I will be doing this for every guest post from here on out. It’s easy to take one format and quickly customize it to welcome specific guests.
Chonce says
Congratulations on the recognition and thanks so much for nominating me! Your tips for new bloggers are great! Guest posting can really help get your name out there and I still guest post from time to time.
Charissa says
Thank you Chonce! Guest blogging has been the biggest cause of traffic and increase in subscribers. I need to search out more opportunities in the future.

Oh, I hadn’t thought about setting up a custom page! It’s a great idea. Arrgh, I really need to get better at writing pages. 🙂
Charissa says
I had heard about it, and just tried it with my last guest post with great success! Do you have a WordPress site, Marie? There’s a landing page template included. I have purchased Thrive Leads and the companion program Thrive Content Builder, which have made making lead pages and opt in forms a breeze, a review is coming soon.
Just Plain Marie says
I use Blogger, with a highly customized site (still need to fix my favicon, though!). I have my pages set up similar to landing pages, so I can definitely do custom pages.
Charissa says
Here’s one of my custom pages for you to get an idea of what I am doing after I’ve researched what should go on the landing page….https://changeyourfinances.com/welcome-dont-waste-crumbs-guests/
