2. We all learned to be content
Save time and money with my best-selling resources in Complete Change Your Finances Bundle.
Not content in a way that caused laziness, but content in a way that produced gratitude.
Everyone has wants, but what being unemployed taught us was that we needed to prioritize those wants so that we could have what we need.
I was (and am) so grateful for my “dumb” phone even though smart phones are super cool and only $25 a month extra because that $25 could instead be spent on adding a new fruit tree to our property, or some other thing that would benefit us more.
I’m so grateful for our 12 year old van with 220,000 miles and no payment because keeping that van with no payment has allowed us to put money in savings each month so that when we choose to purchase another vehicle we have the cash to do so.
Our children learned to be content with not going out to eat so we could go on a vacation each summer.
They also learned to be content to wait for things that were not necessities and not rush out and get something just because we want it right then.
That sometimes meant not have milk for a couple of days, or having to wear a “not my favorite” pair of shoes for a week or two when “my favorite” pair of shoes is too small. It really is okay for us and our children to have to wait for things.
HOPE – we all can use some. But when you go through long term unemployment or underemployment you need a special kind of hope. We’ve taken the things we learned from a 4 year season of unemployment and put them in Hope – Thriving While Unemployed. Click here to get the e-book.
3. We learned the value of being out of debt
In the spring of 2008, we were doing better financially than we had ever done.
When things are going well, payments aren’t a big deal at all. But when we were faced with no income, we were so happy we didn’t have to make any payments other than our mortgage and utilities.
You never know when life can turn upside down and the less financial obligations you have, the better off you will be. If you are currently in debt, I want to encourage you to pay it off as quickly as possible.
It seems impossible, but we found hope during unemployment...
